Robbie Williamson, Chair of the Board, OpenPOWER Foundation
Last week was a special occasion: the OpenPOWER Foundation hosted its first Twitter Chat โ moderated by yours truly and our Executive Director Hugh Blemings. We focused on the upcoming OpenPOWER Summit and the innovations and collaboration that OpenPOWER members have developed.
In case you werenโt able to attend and participate, here is a recap of the conversation. Donโt forget to register for OpenPOWER Summit 2018 here!
Where are you from and what are you doing with POWER?
I'm currently Field CTO for @Canonical providing technical oversight, leadership, & partner management for key Cloud, Telco, & Enterprise accounts. We enable POWER on @Ubuntu! I'm also the Chair of the Board of Directors for the OpenPOWER Foundation. #OpenPOWERChat https://t.co/Ppn3hnLnnf

I consider myself pretty fortunate actually – I get to work on OpenPOWER full time now as Executive Director of the Foundation, right at a time when we have some of the most amazing solutions in POWERs history out there ๐ #Openpowerchat Oh and Power9 is an awesome chip… https://t.co/zf1DelyWHW

A: South India / Texas . I help @Rackspace build its own compute infrastructure based on POWER9 processors: Barreleye G2 . This server, being in @OpenComputePrj form-factor has wider appeal and usability. Work with bunch of @OpenPOWERorg partners to accomplish this.

What are the most exciting opportunities for POWER in 2018?
Hmm, where to start ๐ AI is obviously a big deal, the combination of POWER9 and Acceleration over the fastest in class interconnects is pretty impressive. #OpenPOWERChat https://t.co/rfnvI88Pjx
— Hugh Blemings (@hughhalf) March 1, 2018
(continued… ๐ As a long time Free & Open Source software developer though, the real standout for me is having an entirely open software stack available – basic firmware to application. #OpenPOWERChat https://t.co/rfnvI88Pjx

I'm particularly excited about the potential for POWER in #5G applications, specifically in #EdgeComputing where the acceleration and performance is a must for applications requiring low latency response. #OpenPOWERChat https://t.co/IM5d8Xmuo7

2018 is year of the POWER processor. With bunch of P9 servers with unique capabilities such as PCIe Gen4, OpenCAPI, CPU-GPU NVlink 2.0 (first ever), application developers / hosting providers will turn to POWER9. This cutting edge IO is backed by strong cores #OpenPOWERchat

What are you most looking forward to at OpenPOWER Summit 2018?
I'm super excited to see and hear what all of our members are doing with POWER. But if I had to name a few, I can't wait to see what @Google and @Uber have been doing with the platform. Can't wait to see everyone…so register today!!! – https://t.co/gy6zNunVDw #OpenPOWERChat https://t.co/RE2sNfdoeS

We've a great range of speakers from across the ecosystem doing keynotes, panels & tech sessions. I'm an engineer at heart so I'm most looking forward to the tech, but will be equally cool to hear what the likes of Limelight, @ORNL and @Nimbix are doing ๐ #OpenPOWERChat https://t.co/bEuTGN1SnS
— Hugh Blemings (@hughhalf) March 1, 2018
I'm looking forward to @Google Keynote. They've been great partners for @Rackspace . Look fwd to how ORNL uses CPU-GPU NVLink.
How could I not be looking forward to my own talk , and showing off Barreleye G2 server in #REVEAL ? Link : https://t.co/49LKJFfWSB #OpenPOWERchat

What would you like to see at upcoming OpenPOWER Summits in Europe & China?
Honestly, just more cool hardware and applications benefiting from POWER ????. It would be interesting to see if there are any regional specific use cases, and how they are benefiting from the POWER architecture. #OpenPOWERChat https://t.co/ubcPmX3yz0

We've really active communities in both these geographies, for example I was just amazed at the number of companies involved when I went to our Beijing event last year, very impressive indeed #openPOWERChat https://t.co/foyfjLtkxq
— Hugh Blemings (@hughhalf) March 1, 2018
(continued) I wasn't at the last European summit we ran but I fully expect an equally impressive turnout of solutions and technical sessions there – really active crew in the EU too ๐ #OpenPOWERChat https://t.co/foyfjLtkxq
